Q.What is organic soil?
A. Organic soil is a dynamic, complex eco-system that permits a free exchange of air and water. Photosynthesis and natural recycling provide food as biology works to balance the soil, establishing a comfortable environment for roots to grow.
Q.What is a sustainable landscape?
A. A sustainable landscape allows plants to grow without applying chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Water use is also reduced due to increased root growth.
Q.How do I know that I need organic soil care?
A. A number of conditions could suggest a need: Concern for children and pets playing in your yard, plant deterioration, and expensive property maintenance.
Q. How do I identify qualified ecological landscape service providers?
A. Qualified providers are trained and certified by trade associations and laboratories and should be able to supply evidence of certification.
Q.What does a typical process look like?
A. First, a site analysis is performed for a nominal fee. If you decide to accept the program, the fee is credited to your account. Next, a compaction test is conducted, and soil samples are taken and sent to a lab. Once all the data is compiled and reviewed, a program is presented. If approved, applications begin.
Q.When is a good time to get started?
A. Early spring is the best time to begin because a full program can be completed during that year. However, effective programs can be launched in summer and fall as well.
Q.How long will the onsite work take?
A. The site analysis takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the property and the complexity of the situation. The compaction testing and soil sampling also will range from 30 to 60 minutes. Surface and vertical applications may take one to two hours, while spray applications can be completed in five to 15 minutes per area.
Q.How much does a typical service cost?
A. The site analysis costs $50. Compaction testing, laboratory work, data fill and program development of one to three areas cost from $300 to $1,149. Liquid surface applications cost from $200 to $400 a half-acre, foliage spray applications cost from $3 to $4 per gallon. Vertical or horizontal aeration treatments to correct compaction problems are applied at $100 per hour. Many soil conditions can be dramatically improved the first year. Each year as soil condition and plant health improves, testing and applications will decrease. The goal of the program is to establish a healthy, sustainable and balanced plant and soil relationship.
Q.Are there any guarantees?
A. Organic soil care has been proven to create low-cost, healthy, sustainable landscapes in many locations. There are no guarantees that a landscape will respond to any type of treatment. However, it is likely that your landscape will respond favorably to natural plant and soil care.
Q.What is the property owner’s participation in this process?
A. The property owner must gradually reduce and eventually eliminate the use of all chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. The owner must also water plants responsibly. |
